Bald Thigh Syndrome
Bald Thigh Syndrome (BTS) in greyhounds is a cosmetic issue, meaning it doesn't affect the dog's health or lifespan.
It particularly occurs on the thighs, but sometimes other areas of the body can be affected as well including the belly and lower neck. When it affects the lower neck the hair loss can often be mistaken for a low thyroid problem or the collar rubbing. Note: Greyhounds have a lower thyroid reading than other breeds of dogs.
No one really knows why some greyhounds get Bald Thigh Syndrome while others don't. Lots of research has taken place and many reasons have been discounted over the years, but some believe it's genetic, stress or diet.
It may not be from one single cause but a combination, so if the dog has that combination it will get it. A lot of greyhounds have it but its more noticeable on the black ones.
There’s no known cure, but some believe adding oats to their food encourages the hair to grow back, and if it is going to grow back it may take 6 months or more.
If the hair doesn’t grow back don’t worry about it. It doesn't bother the dogs, only people, which it shouldn't really because some people have more hair than others which is acceptable.
Greyhounds are not bred for their looks as so many other breeds are. They are bred for their good health, speed and temperament.
